How EPF works and why it's India's best retirement tool

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Both you and your employer contribute 12% of your basic salary each month. Of the employer's 12%, 3.67% goes to your EPF account and 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS). Interest is currently 8.25% p.a., declared annually by the EPFO.

EPF is one of the most tax-efficient savings instruments in India, following the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) structure: contributions are tax-deductible under Section 80C, interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free if you've completed 5 years of continuous service. This makes it significantly better than FDs or taxable investments for long-term wealth building.

The power of EPF compounds significantly over a long career. Starting at 25 with a ₹30,000 basic salary and 5% annual increments, you could accumulate over ₹1 crore by retirement at 58 — largely driven by the compounding effect over 33 years and your employer's matching contribution.
