What is a Fixed Deposit and how is it calculated?
A Fixed Deposit (FD) is one of the most popular savings instruments in India, offered by banks and NBFCs. You deposit a lump sum for a fixed tenure at a predetermined interest rate. Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly, meaning your interest earns interest too — this is why the effective yield is slightly higher than the stated rate.
The formula is: Maturity = P × (1 + r/400)^(4×t), where P is principal, r is the annual rate, and t is the tenure in years. For example, ₹1 lakh invested at 7% for 3 years with quarterly compounding grows to approximately ₹1.23 lakh — earning ₹23,000 in interest.
FDs are ideal for risk-averse investors seeking guaranteed returns. Senior citizens typically get an extra 0.25–0.50% on FD rates. Interest is taxable as per your income tax slab, and TDS is deducted if interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens) in a financial year.
