How to calculate mutual fund returns in India

Mutual fund returns can be measured in two ways: absolute return and CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate). Absolute return tells you the total percentage gain or loss, while CAGR normalises this across the holding period to show an annualised growth rate — making it easier to compare investments held for different durations.

For example, if you invested ₹1 lakh and your current value is ₹1.5 lakh after 3 years, your absolute return is 50% but your CAGR is approximately 14.47% per year. CAGR is the standard metric used by fund houses and SEBI to report performance, making it the most meaningful number for comparison.

Note that this calculator works for lump sum investments. For SIP investments, use the XIRR method (available in Excel/Sheets) which accounts for multiple cash flows at different dates. The returns shown here are pre-tax — factor in 10% LTCG tax on equity fund gains above ₹1 lakh per year.
