What is a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP)?

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) lets you withdraw a fixed amount from your mutual fund corpus every month. The remaining corpus continues to earn returns, which helps it last longer than a simple savings account. SWP is popular among retirees in India as an alternative to traditional pension income.

The key insight is the balance between withdrawal rate and investment return. If your corpus earns 8% annually and you withdraw 8% annually, the corpus remains stable. Withdraw more and it depletes; withdraw less and it grows. For a ₹1 crore corpus at 8% return, you can sustain a withdrawal of approximately ₹66,000/month indefinitely.

Unlike annuities, SWP keeps your money invested in market-linked instruments. Long-term capital gains (LTCG) on equity mutual funds beyond ₹1 lakh per year are taxed at 10%, which makes SWP more tax-efficient than FD interest for most investors in higher tax brackets.
