GST (Goods and Services Tax) replaced a complex web of central and state taxes in India in 2017. It applies to almost all goods and services at four main rates: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential items like food grains are exempt or taxed at 5%, while luxury goods and sin goods (tobacco, cars) are taxed at 28% plus cess. For intra-state transactions, the GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) at the full rate applies.
This calculator helps you in two directions: adding GST to a base price to arrive at the final invoice amount, or removing GST from an MRP to find the original pre-tax price. The "Remove GST" mode is useful when you have the inclusive price (like on a product label) and need to find out how much tax is embedded. The GST amount shown is the total tax; in domestic B2C transactions, this will be split equally as CGST and SGST on your invoice.
Businesses registered under GST can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid for business purchases, effectively reducing their tax liability. If you are a freelancer or small business owner, ensure you register for GST if your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states). Not registering when required attracts penalties and you lose the ability to collect GST from clients.
