TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is the mechanism through which the Indian government collects income tax at the point of income generation, rather than at the end of the financial year. Employers deduct TDS from salaries every month based on the estimated annual tax liability. Banks deduct TDS on FD interest when it exceeds the threshold (₹40,000 for regular citizens and ₹50,000 for senior citizens). Tenants paying rent above ₹50,000 per month must deduct TDS at 5% under Section 194-IB.

For salaried employees, the TDS calculation uses the new tax regime slabs for FY 2025-26, which has zero tax on income up to ₹3 lakh, 5% from ₹3–7 lakh, 10% from ₹7–10 lakh, 15% from ₹10–12 lakh, 20% from ₹12–15 lakh, and 30% above ₹15 lakh. A standard deduction of ₹50,000 is available under the new regime. A 4% health and education cess is added on top of the tax. Your employer adjusts TDS throughout the year based on investment declarations.

If you have excess TDS deducted (for example, because your employer didn't account for HRA exemption), you can claim a refund by filing your income tax return. TDS certificates (Form 16 for salary, Form 16A for others) are issued by the deductor and must be used when filing your ITR. Always verify your TDS entries in Form 26AS or AIS on the IT portal before filing.
